Where GMT came from
Greenwich Mean Time dates back to the 19th century, when the Royal Observatory in Greenwich became the world's reference for navigation and, later, for railway and telegraph timetables. "Mean" refers to the fact that it averages out the small seasonal wobble in the Sun's apparent motion. For decades, GMT was the world's effective standard.
Why UTC replaced it as the standard
As atomic clocks arrived in the mid-20th century, scientists could measure time far more precisely than the Earth's slightly irregular rotation allowed. In 1972 the world adopted UTC as the official standard. UTC is kept by atomic clocks but nudged with occasional leap seconds so it never drifts more than 0.9 seconds from astronomical time. In other words, UTC gives you the precision of atomic time while staying tied to the actual turning of the planet.
So do they ever differ?
In terms of the clock time you would read off a wall, GMT and UTC are effectively identical — the difference is a fraction of a second at most. The practical distinctions are:
- GMT is a zone that some countries actually keep. The UK uses GMT in winter, then switches to British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer. So "GMT" as a local time is seasonal in practice.
- UTC never changes. It has no daylight saving and no summer variant. It is the same all year, everywhere.
