Daylight saving time (DST) is the practice of moving clocks forward by one hour in spring and back again in autumn. The goal is to shift an hour of daylight from the early morning, when many people are asleep, to the evening, when they are awake and active. It is sometimes called "summer time" in Europe.
Spring forward, fall back
The classic memory aid captures the whole idea. In spring, clocks "spring forward" — a region jumps from, say, 02:00 straight to 03:00, losing an hour. In autumn, clocks "fall back" — 02:00 becomes 01:00, and that hour is repeated, giving one extra hour of sleep.
Crucially, the switch changes a region's offset from UTC, not UTC itself. London sits at UTC+0 in winter but UTC+1 in summer under British Summer Time. New York moves from UTC−5 to UTC−4. This is exactly why a fixed UTC reference is so useful: it never moves.
Why the clocks change matters for conversions
DST is the single biggest source of confusion when comparing times across countries, because different regions switch on different dates — and some do not switch at all. For a few weeks each spring and autumn, the usual time difference between two cities can be an hour off what you expect.
Consider London and New York. For most of the year they are five hours apart. But the EU and the US change their clocks on different weekends, so there is a short window where the gap is only four hours. Who observes daylight saving time?
DST is far from universal. Roughly speaking:
- Observed: most of North America, Europe, and parts of the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
- Not observed: the vast majority of Africa and Asia, including all of Japan, China and India, plus most of the tropics — where day length barely changes through the year, so there is little to gain.
Even within countries that observe it, there are exceptions. In the United States, Arizona and Hawaii do not change their clocks. In Australia, some states shift and others do not, so the time difference between Australian cities changes through the year.
The northern and southern hemispheres are opposite
Because seasons are reversed across the equator, so is DST. When the northern hemisphere springs forward in March, the southern hemisphere is falling back. This means the time gap between, say, London and Sydney swings by two full hours over the course of a year, and there are brief periods where their clocks are unusually close or unusually far apart.
Is DST going away?
Daylight saving is increasingly debated. Critics point to disrupted sleep, a measurable short-term rise in heart attacks and traffic accidents after the spring change, and limited energy savings in the modern era. Several regions have discussed abolishing the twice-yearly switch, though few have actually done so. Until they do, the safest approach is never to do time-zone maths in your head across a DST boundary — anchor everything to UTC instead.
