What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary time standard the world uses to regulate clocks. It does not change with the seasons and has no daylight saving time, which makes it the neutral reference every other time zone is measured against. Your local time is simply UTC plus or minus a fixed offset — for example, UTC+1 or UTC−5.

UTC vs GMT

GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and UTC point to the same clock time for everyday purposes, so you will often see them used interchangeably. The difference is technical: GMT is a time zone based on the sun's position at the Greenwich meridian, while UTC is a precise standard kept by atomic clocks and coordinated internationally. For scheduling and everyday use, UTC and GMT are effectively identical.
